Church of Ireland Parish Records Finder Aids updated

As posted some time ago, after much wailing and gnashing of teeth when I discovered that John Grenham's Irish Ancestors site was going to be leaving the Irish Times server and thus invalidating more 2500 hyperlinks I had set up for civil parishes in these spreadsheets, I have finally got around to a practical solution.

I'm sorry if you liked being able to jump right from the civil parish name to its map page but I have had to disable that function.  Instead, you will find a bright blue "Civil Parishes" named cell just under the county name.  So, once you have found the CoI parish you are interested in, make a note of the civil parish it belongs to (not always exactly the same name) and click on the "Civil Parishes" cell.  This will take you to the Civil Parishes map for the county where you can chose the parish from the list and learn more about it.

I've also been adding some more information to the finding aid which is in danger of turning them into a riotous smorgasbord of colour but that's what having "A" level Art does to you!  I've been adding in details of parish registers known to have perished in the PROI fire in 1922 (in red) so at least you will know what it's not worth looking for in its original form.  That's not to say that other material might not have been collated by either the RCBL or IFHF volunteer subscribers to attempt to make up the deficit, so still check out the date columns to see if there is anything listed.  This information is present for all the counties of the province of Ulster plus Carlow, Galway and Wicklow at the moment.

Co. Wicklow also has some more colour-coded information which I'm experimenting with.  Parish names in brown followed by (See ...) indicate that you need to consult another parish's records as they do not appear to have their own?   Also, I've added details of the microfilm holdings of parish records at the NAI, so if you can't make it out to the RCBL to view what they have but can make to central Dublin, then you might still be able to find treasure.  The date ranges covered are mostly the same as the RCBL but not always...?  If the NAI has film of registers that the RCBL does not have it does rather make you wonder what they filmed?  Welcome to wonderful world of Irish genealogy!

I've also heard that there is a new version of one of the principal sources I have been using to compile these finding aids coming along in August, namely the Table of Parochial Registers Throughout Ireland from the RCB.  I look forward to seeing how they have improved the readability and integrity of this important document  ... which is crying out to be put into a searchable database online ... which is why I built my spreadsheets in the first place!
