"Settling under the Saltire" - the Irish in Scotland
I gave a talk in Dublin for the Irish Genealogical Research Society's Open Day a few years ago on "Finding the Irish in Scotland", which this page supports. Remember, if you have "mislaid" an ancestor's sibling, don't assume they automatically emigrated across the Atlantic - Scotland was much closer to home and cheaper to get to. You may also be arriving at this page courtesy of one of my Scottish talks. You will all be researching the same Scottish records.
Wherever you are starting from, I promise, you will find yourself blessed as the level of detail recorded is wonderful. As this vexillogical depiction of birthplaces in my family tree illustrates, this Scottish lass had at least 2 branches with Irish ancestry settled in Scotland lurking in her family tree well before her Irish father (of part Scots descent) made his way to Glasgow. And yes, that is an Indian flag lurking in the middle, but that's another story! See my page on the Irish in India if you're intrigued.
I've created some pages that contain lots of links to both the main sources of records and advice, as well as some less well known but useful sites that have all supported my own research. I have also made some reading recommendations should you want to invest in a book or two.
