What's that? - Glossary and Acronyms
If the past is a foreign country, then that means learning a new language. I've come across quite a few terms that have had me perplexed so here is a space on the "menu" where I've jotted down a few to remind myself. I've also tried to think about what they might tell us about how our ancestors lived and made their mark for us to find or how they might make you think about interpreting evidence. Let me know your favourites and I'll consider adding them to the pile.
I've also resorted to using some Acronyms when I repeatedly refer to some institutions for example on other pages. Follow the green link for a list of translations.

Gale Days
These are usually referred to on land documents with respect to when the rents were due on leases. They may also be called quarter days as traditionally there were 4 each year linked to the ecclesiastical calendar, but the 2 dates I have seen most often referred to are the 25th of March (Lady Day) and the 29th of September (Michaelmas.) See Wikipedia entry for more information. Genealogically speaking, picture your ancestor on these days as they would have had to probably make their way to the Estate office or the bank in the nearest town perhaps to deposit the money. So, they may have transacted other business e.g. taking out new leases perhaps or lodging a will?
